After Levi’s first wife, the mother of Abby Crane, died, he remarried and moved from Berkley where generations of Cranes had lived to New Bedford, Massachusetts. He was a merchant in this port city and did a brisk business in coal. Levi Lankton Crane’s oldest child, Abby Crane, married Benjamin Bennett Briggs in 1852. He expressed surprise at the news and disappointment that he had been unable to attend.
