Samuel Lawrence Ward followed his father into the ministry.  He graduated from Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, before earning his doctorate in divinity at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Desiring to serve in the foreign mission field, he and his new wife Irene Briggs settled in Persia where all of their children were born. In 1897 he resigned from his mission work and returned to the United States.  He was pastor to churches in Ohio and California; and in 1921, at the age of 71, he applied for and received a pension.
