Pauline Kerr was born in Sacramento, California on June 20, 1927, along with her twin sister Roberta. Roberta passed away 5 years later from pneumonia. Her older sister, Isabel, was a loving devoted big sister and often was a sitter for Pauline and Don. Pauline grew up at the Hollywood reservoir where her father was the reservoir caretaker. As beautiful as the area behind the iconic Hollywood sign was, it could be remote and isolated for a young girl. During the 30’s and 40’s few families had cars so her only playmate was Don, her younger brother. In 1948 she entered the University of Southern California, majoring in English, where she met her husband Clayton Howland Jr. They married on August 13, 1949, and quickly started a family. She was a devoted wife and mother. I think because her mother always worked outside the home, she was eager to provide her children with what she missed. Pauline hosted birthday parties for every child’s birthday, was a leader for her children’s girl and boy scout Troops, and sewed dresses for her daughter. Pauline was the founder of the Covina Woman’s Club, taught English to Iranian immigrants at U.S.C., and opened her home to foreign immigrants from Vietnam who were adjusting to life in the U.S. She also welcomed foreign exchange students from Paraguay and Japan who each spent a high school year with her family. Pauline’s life was one of quiet strength and dedication and lasting contributions to her family.
